Shepherd’s pie

This is an all time family favorite at our home. I make it using either lamb, beef or chicken minced meat ,used corned beef and even chopped cooked chicken breast . Also its a sure way that my sons eat vegetables so I add as much as I can. When Im pressed for time I ‘cheat’ and use instant mashed potatoes.

6 abundant servings

  • 750g minced meat of your choice
  • Chopped veg ,eggplant,marrows,carrots ,peas
  • cauliflower & broccoli florets .
  • 1 can polpa
  • 4 tablespoons tomato paste
  • 3 kg peeled ,diced and boiled potatoes
  • 3eggs
  • 1/2 cup milk or a  small pkt of cream
  • grated cheese
  • 3 cloves garlic
  • Worchestershire  sauce & Hp sauce
  • 1 teaspoon all spice
  • 2 chopped onions

Using a pot ,fry the onions and add the all spice, the meat and let it cook ,add the finely chopped or squeezed garlic ,the veg and stir and let them fry a bit. Mix in the tomato paste and after the can of  tomato polpa . A few dashes of Worchestershire  sauce and 2 tablespoons Hp steak sauce and salt & pepper according to taste and let it simmer uncovered on low heat.

Mash the boiled potatoes, adding the milk or cream, beaten eggs and some of the grated cheese and seasoning .

Grease a dish with margarine and spread half the mashed potato ,then the meat  & veg ,over it spread the remaining mashed potato .Sprinkle remaining grated cheese on top.

Bake in preheated 180C oven until the top is golden.
Tips: Sometimes I even add a layer of  sauteed spinach .
