Egyptian black pepper rice (usually served with fish)

This is a typical Egyptian rice dish from Alexandria that is served with fish. Easy to make and very tasty. Although it has a tablespoon of ground black pepper its not hot just mildly spicy.


500 g basmati rice

1 chopped onion

1 tablespoonful ground black pepper

1 ltr water

salt according to taste


In a pot heat oil until very hot then add the chopped onion and black pepper.

Stir and cook until onion is brown stirring now and then. Keep an eye on it so it does not burn.

Pour the water over it and add the salt and let it boil.Then add the basmati rice ,cover ,and put flame low and let it cook until water is absorbed.

When its ready let it stand for about 5 minutes then fluff rice with fork and serve.
